Meatless Monday: Banana Chocolate Bites
As a registered dietitian and parent, I’ve learned something important about kids and snacks:
If it feels fun, they’re instantly interested.
And honestly? That can work in our favor.
Because sometimes the best family-friendly recipes are the ones that feel like treats while still being made from simple, nourishing ingredients. That’s exactly why these Banana Chocolate Bites became such a regular thing in our freezer.
The first time I made them, my kids thought they were getting mini ice cream sandwiches.
Frozen banana slices layered with peanut butter and dipped in chocolate? From their perspective, this was dessert.
From my perspective? It was a snack built from fruit, healthy fats, and a little dark chocolate that actually kept them satisfied.
That’s the sweet spot I’m always trying to find.
These bites are creamy from the banana, rich from the peanut butter, and have that satisfying snap of chocolate once frozen. And because they’re kept in the freezer, they become one of those easy grab-and-go options for:
after-school snacks,
summer treats,
lunchbox desserts,
or those “I want something sweet” moments in the evening.
And maybe my favorite part? Kids can help make them.
They love building the little banana sandwiches, dipping them into chocolate, and sneaking a few chocolate-covered fingers along the way. It turns snack prep into something fun instead of just another task.
As a parent and dietitian, I’m always looking for recipes that lower stress while still supporting balanced eating habits—and this one checks both boxes beautifully.
Banana Chocolate Bites
Ingredient List
3 ripe bananas
⅓ cup (85g) natural peanut butter
½ cup (90g) dark chocolate chips
2 tsp coconut oil
Directions
Slice the bananas
Peel and slice the bananas into rounds.
Line a tray or cutting board with baking paper.
Make the banana sandwiches
Spread about ½ teaspoon of peanut butter onto one banana slice.
Top with another banana slice to create a small sandwich.
Repeat until all banana slices are used.
Freeze
Place the banana sandwiches onto the lined tray.
Freeze for about 1 hour, or until firm.
Melt the chocolate
In a microwave-safe bowl or using a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil together until smooth.
Dip the bites
Dip each frozen banana sandwich halfway into the melted chocolate.
Place back onto the baking paper-lined tray.
Freeze again
Return to the freezer for another 15–20 minutes, or until the chocolate shell has fully set.
Store
Transfer the bites to a freezer-safe container.
Store in the freezer for up to 1–2 months.
Serve
Let the bites sit at room temperature for about 5 minutes before eating for the best texture.
Makes 15 servings.
